Mexico’s Deli is literally down the street from where I work, and I had heard good things about it, but it wasn’t until summer hit that I had the time to go down there and eat. Upon finishing my meal, I texted my husband: “I just ate magic.” That about sums up my experience there. Mexico’s Deli is a humble little spot inside a strip mall; you’d miss it driving by if you weren’t looking hard, and my condolences to you for doing so. Their specialty (and the meal I got) is their tacos al pastor. Their meat comes off something called a “trompo”—picture a big, vertical schwarma cone of meat, but with pork, and that’s it. The pork is marinated and served on three corn tortillas with pineapple, cilantro, and red onions. The tacos come out with a fabulous, dense, porky cup of charro beans that are silky and decadent. They also have both a tomatillo and avocado green sauce or a red version that is muy muy caliente. The pork is perfectly cooked and marinated, and the pineapples, cilantro, and red onions are all so fresh…magic. I was there at lunch, and the majority of the patrons seemed to be ordering tortas, which were huge and looked fantastic as well, so I shall be trying those on my next visit. I would give it more than four stars, but I want to go back and try more magic….
